Important Information for Health, Counseling & Student Wellness Patients

Health, Counseling and Student Wellness (HCSW) provides primary medical services to Northern Kentucky University students, faculty and staff, as well as individual, group and couples counseling to NKU students. For more information on our services click here.

Our Nurse Practitioners are "in-network" providers for:

  • Aetna
  • Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Humana
  • Lewermark (International Student Insurance)
  • Tricare
  • United Health Care

Our Counselors and Psychologists are "in-network" providers for:

  • Aetna
  • Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Cigna
  • Humana
  • Medical Mutual of Ohio

At this time, HCSW does not accept MEDICAID/MEDICARE insurance.

While many of our services are covered by health insurance plans, it is recommended that each individual check his or her plan for coverage details.

The Affordable Care Act has allowed more students to be covered by their parents' health insurance for a longer period of time. HCSW wants to provide you the opportunity to use the benefits you have.

Health Insurance is NOT required of general students. However, the American health care system is very expensive and NKU strongly encourages ALL students to maintain adequate health insurance coverage. Fast and convenient access to health care is important for students to avoid disruption of their studies and significant financial hardship should major medical care be required due to an unforeseen illness or injury.

International students (and their dependents) who have F1 and J1 Visas are required by law to have health insurance, otherwise they will be in violation of their immigration status. For more information on this, click here.

HCSW is  able to accept credit card payments as well as checks, cash and Allcard payments. The amount charged per visit is based upon the type and complexity of the service provided. Copays and deductibles are due at the time of service. The department will handle the entire process of billing your health insurance carrier, so you will not have to file claim forms yourself. Just be sure to bring your insurance card with you to each visit.
